With approximately two hundred thousand members in England, Freemasons who have gone through the rituals of each degree with rolled-up trousers legs, secret handshakes, and beautiful and profound systems of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols, it’s understandable that newly Initiated Entered Apprentice Freemasons may, at first, find the ritual of their Initiation somewhat bewildering.

With this in mind, Manchester Masons and members of the Manchester Level Club and the Learning and Development Committee sought permission to hold an event on the 23rd of May, 2023, at Salford Masonic Hall to demonstrate and explain the First Degree Ceremony. It is hoped that all newly Initiated and light blue Masons from throughout the Province will be interested in attending the event to improve their understanding of the First Degree Ceremony.

Freemasons are part of an ancient tradition that includes rituals and symbols particular to each degree. The Initiation Ceremony first teaches us honour, morality, and virtue lessons.

During their Initiation, a candidate will be asked over eighteen questions; he only answers two. All the other answers are given to him by the Junior Deacon.

So why do we ask so many questions that an Initiate will not know the answers to?

The Explanation of the First Degree will allow newly initiated Entered Apprentice Freemasons to go through their Initiation again, this time observing it from a different perspective and obtaining the answers to all of the queries that they might have regarding their Initiation.

Pictured rehearsing for the event are Manchester Masons W Bro Philip Titterton of Friendship Lodge 44, Bro Paul Mansell and Bro Hiten Patel of Caledonian Lodge 204, Bro Nick Druce of Arkscroll Lodge 6594, Bro Tom Daniel of Silent Temple Lodge 126, Bro Aaron Garner and Bro Francesco Toto of Maccabee Lodge 8947
