WBro Paul Spann

Every mason has a story about why they joined Freemasonry

In some cases, it is the general desire of knowledge and the sincere wish of helping others, which is the real nature of a Mason, especially when we talk about the Lodge Mentor.

WBro Paul Spann, is the mentor for Silent Temple Lodge126. When Paul joined his Lodge, he was very unsure as to what was about to take place, he explains: “On the night of my Initiation, I remember being struck by just how much work had clearly gone into it. It felt almost like being part of a small play – except I had not seen the script and did not know what part I was playing. It made a real impression on me, and I remember thinking, “There is a lot more to this than I expected.”

He was asked “Since joining, what has been the most surprising or unexpected thing you’ve discovered about the Craft”?

“Without question, the friendships. Freemasonry has expanded my circle of friends considerably. You meet good people from all walks of life, many of whom you may never have crossed paths with otherwise. That has been one of the greatest and most unexpected benefits of being part of the Craft”.

As you are a Lodge Mentor, what you trying to do or give to the new Brethren? “Really, we are all Lodge Mentors. Every Brother has a part to play in helping those around him, especially the person he proposed or encouraged to join. One of the strengths of Freemasonry is that there is always someone you can ask for help, and there is always someone willing to give it – sometimes even when you did not realise you needed it. Also, what I value a lot, are the rituals. We currently have two newer members in my lodge learning the offices of Inner Guard and Junior Deacon. I think it is really important that they are not simply taught the words and the movements, but also helped to understand the purpose of the roles. Ritual makes much more sense when you understand how the different parts fit together, so I try to explain not just what they are doing, but why they are doing it, and try to understand the meaning behind the words. in my opinion this will make everything lot easier. It has to be fun, and everyone is there to support you, so making mistakes, it’s absolutely normal”.

Freemasonry teaches us, that only by listening and practicing, accepting yourself and your limits, will you advance, not only in the Craft, or in the Royal Arch, but in life in general
