Last week, the historic halls of Manchester Hall were filled with warmth, laughter, and reverence as brethren gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone — Brother Ron Barrow’s 50 years in Freemasonry.

Ron’s Masonic journey began in 1975 when, as a young man inspired by the ideals of fellowship and self-improvement, he was initiated into Minnehaha Lodge No. 2363, based at Manchester Hall.

From his earliest days, Ron stood out for his quiet dedication and steady service. Over the decades, he assumed various roles of responsibility within the Lodge, mentoring new members and supporting the welfare of brethren and their families.

He served as Lodge Almoner for seven years, Lodge Chaplain for eleven years, and supported numerous charitable causes — continuously embodying the core Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth.

A Night of Tradition and Tribute

The evening at Manchester Hall was one of both deep tradition and heartfelt gratitude. The Lodge was opened in the usual manner, and the atmosphere in the room was palpable.

Brethren from Minnehaha Lodge and visitors from neighbouring lodges gathered to pay tribute to Ron’s half-century of service.

During the ceremony, WBro Craig Hindle, Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies, was admitted into the Lodge and greeted by the Worshipful Master.

He announced that the Assistant Provincial Grand Master for City East, WBro Paul O’Carroll, was waiting outside with a deputation and demanded admission.

Once the APGM and his deputation entered and were warmly saluted, the Worshipful Master offered him the gavel — an offer gladly accepted for this auspicious occasion.

Ron’s Journey — From Tideswell Dale to the World

Brother Ron was invited to reflect on his life and Masonic journey, and he took everyone on a moving and often humorous trip down memory lane.

He shared stories of his early years, having been born in Tideswell Dale in a house with no gas, water, or electricity, and the daily struggles of that period — including a colourful anecdote about the “night soil man” (he advised, with a chuckle, not to google it).

Ron spoke about his time in the Merchant Navy, during which he travelled extensively around the world. Among his many adventures, he recalled his work in Yemen, where he was part of a team maintaining critical infrastructure — stories that fascinated and entertained the room.

A touching tribute was delivered by WBro Stephen Bissett, who spoke warmly of Ron’s decades of service, mentorship, and friendship within the Lodge.

Other brethren also shared stories, from his early days as a young initiate to the steadfast support and wisdom he has given over the years.

Marking Fifty Years of Dedication

The highlight of the evening came when Ron was formally presented with his 50-Year Certificate & Jewel — a rare and deeply respected honour. Applause filled the room as the brethren celebrated not just a milestone, but a lifetime of loyalty, generosity, and quiet strength.

Following the formalities, the evening continued in true Masonic style with a festive board filled with camaraderie, heartfelt toasts, and good cheer — a fitting conclusion to a night honouring one of Minnehaha Lodge’s most devoted members.

For all who attended, the celebration served as a poignant reminder of what Freemasonry is at its best: lasting friendships, service to others, and the enduring light of tradition. For Brother Ron Barrow, it was a night that beautifully marked half a century of living those values.
