Capt. John Joseph William Thornhill

Life is a mysterious thing. Everyday brings a surprise and it’s up to us how to deal with it. Some keep themselves to themselves. Some decide to give their time to help others, the choice is up to the Individual to decide.

In the case of Capt. John Joseph William Thornhill, the Man who became the National Parade Marshal for The Royal British Legion who provide services to the ex-service community and national events As well as being nurse, John Chose to give his time to others.

He’s story was touching as well as inspiring and as often happens, he doesn’t give himself enough praise.

John Thurnhill, to his friends John, is an Intensive Care Unit Nurse also known as a acritical care nurse who provides specialized care to patients with life-threatening conditions or illnesses. He says:

“Working as a nurse is a very challenging job, but I never planned on making nursing a career. I just I somehow fell into. My initial plan was – as many do – to go travelling for a year and delay my place at Liverpool Hope University to read Music. However, I started work at a hospital and I have never looked back. I completed my nurse training and have been employed in Intensive/Critical Care throughout my career.

It’s a challenging career, both personally and professionally. But a career that is rewarding and steps away from your typical 9-5 job.”

I asked John what role he played in the British Legion:

“I have been a member of The Royal British Legion for over 15 years. I have held various positions over the years predominantly in a ceremonial capacity and fortunate enough to be appointed as the National Parade Marshal for the last 4 years with responsibilities for numerous ceremonial events, a role which concluded in May 2025.  I am now an elected Trustee on the Board of Trustees for the organisation, but the investiture will be arranged in the coming months”.

I asked John why he joined Freemasonry:

It Is a great organisation where I met many individuals who have had a positive impact not just on me, but on my family as well. The charitable aspects appeal to my nature and I felt it was the right place where to be.

I then asked John, what does he feel he can do to help new the generation of masons in their masonic career.

“Telling them to enjoy Freemasonry, travel at your own pace, as it’s the best way to learn. Being in the chair for the first time is always particularly memorable.

Without any doubt the best offices I have held, are the Junior and Senior Deacons.”

Like everyone else, John has a private life and he loves spending time with his partner and friends, enjoying life to the full, helping people in need when he can. A true example.
